a set of sculptural works which expresses the struggle between technology and nature; between the intentional and the spontaneous, between the "raw" and the "cooked". in this case, the part of the tree that transitions between the root and the trunk is characterized by ripples of wood grain that are responses to the tremendous structural forces that the tree resists over its lifetime. this creates a marbled optical effect that is usually found only in stone, hence the name.
