1996-1998. 3-d visual literacy. sophomore studio. department of industrial design. georgia institute of technology. atlanta.

id2002 was a studio based on the development of visual literacy as it pertained to three-dimensional design. concepts about representation, expression, order, disorder, form, and composition were explored in a series of 1 and 2 week exercises. related two-dimensional exercises accompanied each of these assignments.

the projects began with a concept-driven assemblage. this formed the basis for subsequent exercises of formal analysis and abstraction. transitions from two-dimensional images to three-dimensional form through extrusions and patterns of folded surfaces were explored. later exercises focused on other form-giving methods and related issues of proportion, connection, structure, light, and function. required readings for the studio included "principles of three-dimensional design" by w. wong and "form in architecture" by s. rasmussen. each assignment had different material requirements, including card, wood, plastics, and metals. 2d representations were done on white 11"x17" cansson and vellum paper. slide documentation of the coursework was done by the students.
