this table makes reference to the classical greek statuary of artemis, many of which have been found as torsos. the natural feminine form of the tree was idealized into a regular surface by sweeping a convex circular arc around a vertical axis. the natural cleft of the tree also contributed to the feminine formal reference as well as provided a sense of front. the bodice of aluminum allows the viewer to see the silky smooth finish of the wood but prevents it from being touched. this idea of protection at the expense of contact refers to one of the problematics of wilderness in contemporary society. this visual/tactile tension also refers to artemis herself who was the greek goddess of virginity as well as wilderness.
